First Test: Success! Cut a tough stainless steel nail off flush in less than 5 seconds!
I have used Makita power tools since 1971, but I am new to their battery-powered models. I am doing a complete renewal, inside and out, of our large house in the countryside, and this Makita TMD51DZ will be useful for a variety of jobs. The first test for the machine was a great success.Please look at my photo attached to this critique.In the center of the picture you will see the 3mm stub of a stainless steel ring-shank siding nail cut off flush to the wood. I intentionally cut a little deeply to gouge into the wood, because I will have to cut into a lot of wood siding to reach the nails and cut them off flush. The Makita TMA061HM blade I used with the multitool cut through the stainless steel nail in under 5 seconds (FIVE SECONDS!) and cut into the sugi wood like butter!Success! And a great relief!Before typhoon season begins, I must remove and replace the damaged wood siding on a 12m x 3m exterior wall of our house. There are 1,500 to 1,700 mails in that wall. This machine and blade combination will make easy work of it. I may wear out a few blades doing it, but it is worth it.Before buying and testing the machine, I had estimated that I would need one skilled helper and two days, both of us working together to do the job. The nails are very stubborn! You cannot pull them out without breaking a lot of them, and they damage the underlayment when they are pulled out. The cost of the helper for two days would have been ¥30,000. The TM51DZ and a few accessories cost less, and I can now do the job alone in less than two days. I will use the 6AH batteries from my Makita TD171DRG 18VDC driver. They will give the multitool about one hour of running time per charge.I have used my TD171DRG driver heavily for one year. It has performed flawlessly and is durable. I will continue to invest in Makita 18VDC tools based on the performance of this multitool and the driver.ONE CAUTION: The Makita multitool is heavy. It may be difficult to use for some jobs if you are a sedentary office worker or a very small person.
