To me, the best guitarist in the country style. Others may have come close, but Chester beats them all. This is a superb collection of performances (1955-75) and there's a follow-up DVD covering the years 1976-1995.
Chet's no longer with us, but with music like this, his name will live on.
If you like GOOD guitar playing, this is a must for your collection
I was into jazz guitar as a kid, but spent many hours playing along with Chet and learning his classical technique. I met him when he was performing at the concert hall near the University I was attending. I simply went backstage and told the doorman I was an old friend of his; the doorman asked Chet if it was OK and being the man he is, I was allowed to see him. I figured I would just have time to get his autograph and say "hello." As luck would have it we spent the entire intermission talking, and he even invited me to his hotel for a drink. He said he was buying and asked me what I wanted, to which I replied "I don't drink." He said he didn't drink either so we both had soft drinks.
The reason I entitled my review "an old friend" has nothing to do with my meeting him and staying in touch over the years until his death. Chet, if you're a fan, you know that whether you actually meet him or not, is an "old friend" to everyone.
This is an outstanding DVD. It shows the early years of Chet Atkins, who is considered possibly the best guitarist we have ever seen or heard. His dedication to his music and his instrument is evident when you watch him play. And he only got better over time. His talent will be missed. If you love music and especially guitar mausic, this is a must to watch. You will be watching greatness in the making. These are his early years of playing and he only gets better. This is one purchase I am glad I made.
