いつまでも進化するドールズです。録音技術がどんなに良くなっても、曲がこざっぱりしても、デビッド・ヨハンセンが歌うと品性下劣でチープなドールズ節になるのがさすがです。ハノイロックスやエアロスミスのように初期の曲をライブでやると、上手になった分、ヘタウマによるドライブ感が出せなくなっているバンドを沢山見ますが、ドールズは別格です。

As much as I love the Dolls (a quick read through my other NY Dolls reviews ought to explain,) I stalled buying this one. I was queasy when I saw Rundgren was at the helm. In my, and Jerry Nolan's, opinion he stunk up the joint with the production of the first NY Dolls album. (Listen to the demo tapes of A Hard Night's Day and compare.)

But history and true love won out, I bought this latest NY Dolls CD. It's a keeper. Bluesy, biting, mature. It's what the 1970's Dolls ought to sound like in 2009. Much is written about David Jo's way with words, wit, and his growling, gravelly vocal chops. At times he sounds like Howlin' Wolf if the Wolf had been born on Staten Island, and listened to some girl groups. Nothing to take away from David - be it the Dolls, his early solo albums, the Harry Smiths - David is always on the mark.

But it's Sylvain Sylvain who's the under rated glue holding together the signature sound. His sense of songsmithery, rhythm guitar, harmonies, and infectious energy keeps the NY Dolls sound alive. His rhythm guitar was overlooked, with such a presence as Johnny Thunders' reeling, lurching anarchistic solos. Syl was co-writer with David on much of the early solo albums, and throughout the Dolls career. Syl's the man.

But props to Steve Conte, Sami Yaffa, and Brian Delaney, they do not attempt to impersonate people who are no longer with us. They are gifted musicians in their own right. And it's their new energy and musicianship that make the Dolls once again vital. It's a band. It's the attitude that makes them the NY Dolls. Not David, Syl, and a couple of other guys in rent-a-band.

And Rundgren? Well, it's better than the last time. Now that the Beatles have been remastered with 2010 technology, isn't it time to show the original Dolls some digital love?

PS - Trash as a reggae tune works. Don't ask me why. But it does. Pour yourself a Dark & Stormy and get ready for a good listen.

Ce nouvel album des NYD (avec Todd rundgren, déjà aux manettes du premier opus en 1973) est un vrai bonheur! Ce n'est plus la déflagration des années 73/74 qui allait inspirer tant de groupes punks, mais on a ici un album d'un groupe vivant et homogène qui prend son pied à jouer.
Alors que d'autres "anciens" comme les pierres qui roulent, ne nous disent plus rien depuis des décennies; les Dolls nous racontent toujours l'électricité et les plaisirs interdits de leur ville, de leur vie, et des notres...
Sylvain sylvain a des riffs funky plein sa guitare et ce cher david,sa voix vibre toujours de hargne et d'histoires qui ne sont pas pour les petites filles.
Mention particulière à la version reggae de "Trash"; quand les NYD affubles les rastas de vicieuses paillettes!
Un bon album de rock'n'roll pour découvrir l'oeuvre de ces éternels sales gosses sur qui le temps n'a pas de prise...C'est incroyable!

Another album to follow "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This", and an excellent one at that, some great tunes here such as the title track "Cause I Sez So", "Muddy Bones", "My World" and "Making Rain", with even a reggae version of "Trash", produced by Todd Rundgren, and a must for any Doll's fan, well recommened.

New York Dolls-Cause I sez So has sonic survivors Sylvain Sylvain and David Johansen igniting akin to their 70’s incarnation. On the back of the ’06 comeback LP It will please us to remember even This the new CD maintains the motor. Cause I sez So is a jigsaw of gems that shows that four decades of circling this Punishing World has made a dynamic duo stronger for the experience. The ’09 Dolls kick it with their seedy glam/punk-but they also adopt: 60’s pop (with a nod to the epic girl groups of the era), sleazy blues, saloon balladry and spaghetti western rock (that would fit a Tarantino film score). David and Sylvain have burnt every candle at both ends-and, God bless them!-But, for Johnny, Jerry, Arthur and Billy we say RIP!
NB Head back to the Dolls discs of the past for a ride on the hedonistic rollercoaster-and, the Rock ‘n Roll 20 tune best of set is a top taster!
